Compositions, kits, and devices that include calibration and/or quality control reagent(s) for monitoring the performance of blood gas, electrolyte, and/or metabolite instrumentation are disclosed. The oxygen levels in the calibration and/or quality control reagent(s) is controlled by providing oxygen in the form of oxyhemoglobin, whereby hemoglobin stabilizes the oxygen present in the reagent(s) during storage thereof. When desired, the reagent(s) may be contacted with an oxidant to release the oxygen from the hemoglobin and thus provide a desired level of oxygen in the reagent(s).
