A machine (12) for cutting blocks of stone material (14) into slabs by means of cutting wires (16) comprises a frame (22) on which the following are rotatablv mounted: a set of driving pulleys (18) suitable for rotation by first motor means, and at least one set of driven pulleys (20) mounted on a shaft. Each of the driven pulleys (20) is mounted independently and rotatably on the shaft. The machine comprises means (36) for varying the tension of each cutting wire (16) and means for relative movement of the block and cutting wire (16) in the cut feeding direction. The shaft (30) of the at least one set of driven pulleys (20) is designed to rotate in the same direction of rotation as these of the driven pulleys and is connected to second motor means (40).
