Reverse transcriptase mixtures with improved storage stability are provided. In one embodiment, a reaction mixture is disclosed comprising sufficient ingredients, except template RNA, for reverse transcription of RNA, the mixture comprising: a reverse transcriptase having an optimal pH above 8; and a buffer, wherein the mixture has a pH of between 6-8, lacks template RNA, and the reverse transcriptase maintains essentially all reverse transcriptase activity following incubation of the mixture at 50° C for 30 minutes.
