A ventricular assist system (13) and a method of implanting the system (13) are disclosed. The system (13) can have a pump (8), an inflow conduit (10), an outflow conduit (2), attachment ring (22), ring clamp (24), and a valvular structure (12). The attachment ring (22) can be attached to the apex of the heart. The valvular structure (12) can have a flexible, one-way valve in a rigid housing. The inflow conduit (10) can be passed through the valvular structure (12) and the attachment ring (22) into a beating heart with minimal loss of blood. Devices such as slitting tool (300), coring knife (140), and/or C-clamp (600) and use of the devices can form part of the system (13) and method for implanting the ventricular assist device.
