The invention relates to a method for damping electromechanical oscillations in an electromechanical system (50), particularly in an automotive electric or hybrid drive system, comprising at least one electric machine (20) operable with an angular speed (ω el, ω mech) and a phase of said angular speed (ω_el, ω mech), being coupled to at least one torque load (40) and producing an electromotive force (emf ff). The method comprises the steps of (i) deriving actual values of the electromotive force (emf_ff) and (ii) adjusting the phase of the angular speed (ω_el, ω_mech), based on the derived actual values of the electromotive force (emf ff), in a direction in which an oscillatory behaviour of said electric machine (20) is reduced.
