The present invention relates to an apparatus (10) for learning or refining cross country skiing technique. The apparatus comprises: at least one pole unit (12), each comprising at least two rollers (14, 16) and an continuous belt (18) mounted on said rollers for movement around said rollers by arm movements of a user transmitted to the belt by a pole being brought into contact with the belt; at least one foot rest (20) for accommodating and supporting the user's feet; and sensor means (34, 38, 40) for providing signals with respect to at least one parameter of the pole's contact with the belt.
