A knife sharpener comprising a grinding block mounted on a vertical axle, the grinding block having an horizontal grinding surface; a motor arranged to rotate the grinding block; one or more guides pivotally mounted on a support and adapted to receive the blade of a knife so that the cutting edge of the blade contacts the grinding surface; and an adjustment mechanism arranged to adjust the angle of the guides relative to the grinding surface.
