The present invention relates to a peptide of general formula (I): R1-(AA)n-X1-X2-X3-PrO-X4-X5-X7-(AA)P-R2, derived from a protein of the aquaporin family. The present invention also relates to a cosmetic, nutraceutical or pharmaceutical composition comprising a peptide of general formula (I), as active ingredient. The invention also relates to the use of this new active agent in a cosmetic or nutraceutical composition for improving the hydration and the barrier function of the epidermis and for stimulating skin regeneration. The invention also relates to the use of this new active agent, for the preparation of a pharmaceutical, and in particular dermatological, composition for treating pathogenic dryness of the skin or of the mucous membranes. The invention also relates to a cosmetic treatment method for preventing and/or combating dryness of the skin and of the mucous membranes, and the manifestations of skin ageing.
