Chromates are produced from chromium traces in the starting components of cements because of oxidation by air at elevated temperatures during the production of cement and later adding water in order to produce cement mortar. Said chromates irritate the skin, cause allergies, and are possibly carcinogenic. The invention relates to a method and a substance for the reductive chromate detoxification of cement preparations by means of manganese(III) salts that are soluble in water at a pH exceeding 7. Also disclosed is the use of manganese(III) salts to reduce Cr(VI) compounds in cement preparations.
