A negative electrode (1) for nonaqueous electrolyte secondary batteries is characterized by comprising an active material layer (5) and a metal lithium layer (3) between a pair of surface layers (4) for current collection. The negative electrode (1) has two negative electrode precursors (2) respectively comprising a surface layer (4) for current collection and an active material layer (5) arranged on one surface of the surface layer (4) for current collection, and a metal lithium layer (3) is interposed between the negative electrode precursors (2) in such a manner that the active material layers (5) of the negative electrode precursors (2) are opposite to each other and respective surface layers (4) for current collection of the negative electrode precursors (2) face the outside. In each active material layer (5), a metal material having a low lithium compound-forming power is permeated throughout the entire active material layer (5) in the thickness direction.
