A method (10) for producing hydrogen gas from water includes at least the steps of heating pressurized water (12) to a temperature of at least 650° C using two heating stages and feeding the heated and pressurized water (18) to a superheating chamber (20) manufactured from a non-oxidising material and which chamber (20) contains a non-catalytic heating element wherein heat transmitted to the chamber (20) is sufficient so as to cause pressurized and heated water (18) fed to the chamber (20) to dissociate into hydrogen and oxygen (26).
