A method, system, and computer program product (fig.22, item 2200) for converting a binary MPEG-4 (mp4) binary file (fig. 22, item 2210) into an Extensible MPEG-4 Textual (XMT) file (fig. 22, item 2220). The invention includes generating at least one intermediary structured document (fig. 22, item 2245) representing the mp4 binary file (fig. 22, item 2210). A translator is configured to input intermediate document (224) and generate an XMT structured document (fig. 22, item 2220). An XMT serializer (fig. 22, item 2270) is then used to create the XMT file based on the XMT structured document (fig. 22, item 2245).
