A method for the production of hydrogen-containing gas composition such as a synthesis gas including hydrogen and carbon monoxide. The method is carried out in reactor (500), which includes refractory sidewalls (502) that are adapted to contain the molten metal (504). A side-penetrating lance (518) penetrates the furnace near the bottom of the reactor and is provided for the optional introduction of oxygen for the purpose of heating the reactor (500). A top-submerged lance (508) terminates and injects steam and coal below the surface of the slag layer (506) and near the interface of the molten metal (504) and the slag layer (506).
