A method and compositions for targeted drug delivery have been developed. The compositions include a targeting molecule, such as a hormone that specifically binds to a receptor on the surface of the targeted cells; a drug to be delivered, such as a toxin that will kill the targeted cells; and a nanoparticle, which contains on or within the nanoparticle, the drug to be delivered, as well as has attached thereto, the targeting molecule. Nanoparticles can consist of drug or drug associated with carrier, such as a controlled or sustained release materials like a poly(lactide-co-glycolide), a liposome or surfactant. The compositions are administered by injections in most cases, although compositions can be applied topically orally, nasally, vaginally, rectally, and ocularly. Compositions can also be administered to the pulmonary or respiratory system, most preferably in an aerosol.
