The present invention is a fixation shaft for catching medullary nail, e.g. for removing the nail from a femur bone. The shaft has a threaded end with a non-circular cross-sectional shape. The shaft can be fastened to the nail by screwing the threads into engagement with the nail. Due to the non-circularity of the cross-sectional shape, the shaft repetitively forces the nail to widen and contract whereby the threads are allowed to engage any part of the nail, also a part which is not provided with corresponding threads and even without forming shavings. The invention further relates to an extraction device for establishing a pulsating unidirectional force. The extraction device has a displaceable hammer which, during extraction of a nail, hammers against an end stopper and thus generates a pulsating withdrawal force for extracting the nail.
