A method includes: a) applying a monolayer (11a to 11e) of metal oxide particles to a set of glass workpieces (10a to 10e); b) stacking the workpieces; and c) heating the workpieces. The heating can be part of a process for flattening the workpieces, and during heating a set of optically flat plates (2, 3) are pressed against the workpieces. The heating can also be part of a process for densifying and/or annealing the workpieces. The monolayer of metal oxide particles prevents the workpieces from bonding to one another. In one embodiment, the monolayer of metal oxide particles is applied to the workpiece by immersing the workpieces in an aqueous dispersion of the particles.
