A lubricating oil for a refrigerator, characterized as comprising (a) at least one ester represented by general formula (1) wherein R represents a C1 to C18 linear alkyl or a C3 to C18 branched alkyl, R represents H, a C1 to C18 linear alkyl or a C3 to C18 branched alkyl, with the proviso that the total number of carbons contained in the alkyls represented by R and R is 2 to 18 and that when R is H, R represents a branched alkyl, and R represents a C1 to C20 linear alkyl, a C3 to C20 branched alkyl or a C3 to C10 cycloalkyl, and optionally (b) at least one compound selected from the group consisting of an aliphatic polyol ester, a phthalic acid ester, an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid ester, a polyvinyl ether, a hydrocarbon oil and a polyalkylene glycol; a method for lubricating a refrigerator using the lubricating oil; and a hydraulic fluid composition comprising (I) the component (a) or the components (a) and (b), and (II) a coolant.
