A starting device for starting a generator or the like by applying mechanical torque to the rotor of an electromagnetic converter therefor. There is provided a starter spring (60) having an engaging portion (63) engageable with the sixth wheel pinion (11a) in a train wheel connected to a generator. A reset lever (70) is actuated in conjunction with the pull-out operation of the crown to urge the starter spring into engagement with the sixth wheel pinion and thereafter the urging of the starter spring is cancelled in conjunction with the push-in operation of the crown. The starter spring returns to its original position by its spring force, during which return it imparts mechanical torque to the pinion. Since this torque can be set by the elastic force exclusively from the starter spring, stabilized torque can be imparted to a rotor (12).
