A wireless communication network is configured to interface a backbone communication network to a plurality of users at a plurality of facilities. The wireless communication network can include a plurality of wireless network nodes where each node includes a wireless receiver and transmitter configured to provide an optical communication link with a designated other one of the plurality of wireless network nodes. The transmitter/receiver pairs are disposed on a movable mounting structure that includes a motor drive mechanism to move the mounting structure in at least two dimensions, to thereby point said wireless optical transceiver to the designated one of the plurality of wireless network nodes. A communication interface can be included to provide communications between the wireless communication network and the one of the plurality of facilities at which said node is located. At least one of the nodes can also include a second communications interface configured to interface the backbone communication network to the wireless communication network, whereby the wireless network nodes provide a communication interface between the backbone network and the plurality of users at a plurality of facilities at which the wireless network nodes are located.
