A method for recognizing a rough road section in a motor vehicle travel route, comprising the following steps: the acceleration of the motor vehicle is detected by means of an acceleration sensor (10), the acceleration is evaluated at several intervals, and the rough road section is recognized on the basis of the results of said evaluation. The device for recognizing a rough road section in a motor vehicle travel route contains an acceleration sensor (10) to detect the acceleration of said motor vehicle, an evaluation device (12) to evaluate acceleration at several intervals, and a recognition device (13) to recognize the rough road section on the basis of the results thus evaluated. The inventive speed control method entails the following steps: the rough road section is recognized and a command speed is set according to said recognition. The speed control system contains a device for recognizing a rough road section and a speed controller that regulates the speed of the motor vehicle on the basis of the recognition of said rough road section.
