A closure system for use in repetitively opening and closing of a pliable container (2, 102, 152, 177, 202, 227, 252, 302, 419, 447) includes first and second shape memory elements (26, 27; 126, 127; 167, 168; 186-189; 190-193; 216, 217; 230-232; 261, 262; 312-317; 327, 328; 378, 384), each including an elongated, generally concave surface portion (38, 138, 220, 222) and an opposing, generally convex surface portion (39, 139, 221, 223) which are adapted to be attached to respective side walls (5, 6, 105, 106, 155, 156, 180, 181, 205, 206, 255, 256, 304, 305, 307-310) of the pliable container (2, 102, 152, 177, 202, 227, 252, 302, 419, 447) adjacent an openable end (12, 112, 159, 184, 212, 258, 421, 449) thereof. The first and second shape memory elements (26, 27; 126, 127; 167, 168; 186-189; 190-193; 216, 217; 230-232; 261, 262; 312-317; 327, 328; 378, 384) can either face each other to maintain the opposing side walls (5, 6, 105, 106, 155, 156, 180, 181, 205, 206, 255, 256, 304, 305, 307-310) in an open condition or assume a nested position to hold the openable end (12, 112, 159, 184, 212, 258, 421, 449) closed. A method and apparatus for producing pliable containers incorporating the closure system of the invention are also provided.
