A paint injector (10) for digital printing in which paint is deposited in metered amounts on a print medium (69) comprises a wheel (13) rotatable by a shaft (15) of a motor (48), an idler (34) disposed in a paint reservoir (24), and an endless cable (36) disposed around the wheel (13) and the idler (34). The motor (48) is preferably computer controlled (57) such that the rotation of the wheel (13) and thus movement is selectively controlled. As the wheel (13) is rotated, paint contained within the paint reservoir (24) coats the cable (36) and is thus drawn by the cable (36) in front of the air stream (67). The air stream (67) pulls the paint from the cable (36) and carries it toward the print medium (69). By employing a plurality of such paint injectors (10) into a single print head, each containing a different color of paint, and secured to a computer controlled, movable carriage (16) positioned over the print medium (69), a digital image can be painted by the print head on the print medium (69).
