A seat belt tensioner has a piston/cylinder unit (3), a pressurised gas source (17), a belt catching means (3), a tension transmission means (11) and a damping means for absorbing energy when the belt catch means (13) are delayed. The damping means include a first part (15) connected to the tension transmission means (11), laterally projecting therefrom and located outside the cylinder (5) in the non-actuated state of the belt tensioner, and a second part connected to the cylinder (5) and arranged on the front wall (23) of the cylinder next to the belt catching means (13). At least one of the two parts is moved during damping inside the cylinder (5), and so the axial space requirements of the belt tensioner (1) are low.
