The invention concerns hydrolyzable and polymerizable or addition-polymerizable silanes, a process for their preparation and their use for producing silicic acid (hetero)polycondensates or polymers. The silanes according to the invention have the general formula (I) in which the groups and indices are identical or different and have the following meanings: R = hydrogen, R -R -R -SiXxR 3-x, carboxyl, alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, alkylaryl or arylalkyl; R = alkylene, arylene, arylene alkylene or arylene alkylene; R = alkylene, arylene, arylene alkylene or arylene alkylene; R = alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, alkylaryl or arylalkyl; R = -(CHR -CHR )n-, in which n = 0 or 1, -CHR -CHR -S-R -, -CO-S-R -, -CHR -CHR -NR -R -, -Y-CS-NH-R -, -S-R , -Y-CO-NH-R -, -CO-O-R -, -Y-CO-C2H3(COOH)-R -, -Y-CO-C2H3(OH)-R - or -CO-NR -R -; R = alkylene, arylene, arylene alkylene or arylene alkylene; R = hydrogen, alkyl or aryl with 1 to 10 carbon atoms; R = hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, alkylaryl or arylalkyl; X = hydrogen, halogen, hydroxy, alkoxy, acyloxy, alkylcarbonyl, alkoxycarbonyl or NR"2, in which R" = hydrogen, alkyl or aryl; Y = -O-, -S- or -NR -; Z = -O- or -(CHR )m-, in which m = 1 or 2; a = 1, 2 or 3, with b = 1 when a = 2 or 3; b = 1, 2 or 3, with a = 1 when b = 2 or 3; c = 1 to 6; x = 1, 2 or 3; and a+x = 2, 3 or 4.
