A tread mold loading apparatus (20) for use with a plurality of mold segments (202). The tread mold loading machine has a main axle (22) and a plurality of arms (94) extending radially from the main axle. The apparatus positions a prepared tire carcass or built tire (180) relative to the mold segments and positions the mold segments on the exterior of the built tire. The arms include a clamp which can engage and disengage an associated mold segment.
