A process for producing aromatic or heteroaromatic hydroxylamines of the general formula (I) in which R is an unsubstituted or substituted aryl radical or an unsubstituted or substituted hetaryl radical from the pyridine or quinoline group, by hydration of nitro compounds of the general formula (II) R -NO2 in which R has the above meaning, in the presence of a platinum catalyst on an active carbon carrier or in the presence of a sulphur or selenium-doped palladium catalyst on an active carbon carrier, process in which the reaction is conducted in the presence of a morpholine compound substituted at the nitrogen atom of the general formula (III) in which R are alkyl radicals with 1 to 5 carbon atoms and R to R are hydrogen atoms or alkyl radicals with 1 to 5 carbon atoms.
