In a process for operating an anti-lock motor vehicle braking system to achieve directional stability and/or drive slip control with a brake servo (5) controllable independently of the driver's wishes, when it is involved in regulation the brake servo (5) is fully operated independently of the driver's control action and the desired wheel braking pressure is set with the aid of the hydraulic unit (2). If the pressure which can be supplied by the brake servo (5) is insufficient, the first valve (10) is set to its blocked position and further pressure is built up in the wheel brakes (17, 18) by the return pump (13).
