An ISDN interface (88) is provided on a card (30) which is adapted for mounting in a terminal computer (10) and which is operable to exchange data with a terminal computer and an ISDN (16). The ISDN interface card (30) comprises a protocol processor (44) that is programmable to process data encoded in accordance with a number of different protocols, and a digital signal processor (46) that is programmable for data compression and encryption and facsimile applications, and mu -law and a-law conversion, among other applications. The ISDN card (30) dynamically allocates data calls between one or two B-channels to achieve a data transmission rate of 128 bps. A power supply (100) with a ring generator (122) is provided to allow for the use of an analog telephone (102) with the ISDN card (30). The ISDN card (30) is programmable to allow users to create customized screens for various call processes, and to allow for the updating of a flash ROM (52) coupled to the protocol processor (44) through the terminal computer (10) and the ISDN (16).
