A hammer mill apparatus (10) for comminuting materials such as wood, branches, twigs, leaves, grasses, hay, and the like, features a reciprocating batch feeder (24) for feeding the materials to be comminuted into a rotary grinder (68). Adjustable and spring biased feed drum (36) and metering roller (33) meters the material into the hammer mill. The positions of a series of adjustable curved grinding teeth (40) changes the sizes of the comminuted particles.
