A flat, light-emitting discharge panel, such as for back lighting displays (40) has two parallel, transparent glass plates (1 and 2) which are spaced by rows of pyramid-shape pillars (10). The pillars (10) are formed integrally with both plates (1 and 2) and are aligned with and contact each other. The space between the two plates (1 and 2) contains a discharge gas at reduced pressure, the inner surface of the plates and the surface of the pillars (10) being coated with a phosphor which emits light on discharge in the panel. The outer surface of one plate (2) has a reflector (6) which reflects emitted light through the panel to the display (40). The pillars (10) have angled surfaces which reflect light out of the panel and which act as light guides.
