Abrasion-type splitting unit for splitting an ingot (143) made of hard material into a plurality of plates. The unit consists of two identical, horizontal and parallel wire guide cylinders (136, 137), arranged facing one another and turning synchronously, a wire (144) which unwinds from a supply coil (139) and is then wound under tension around the wire guides to form at least one set of cutting wires before being re-engaged by a take-up coil (148), and an actuator (129) operating according to a vertical axis (Z) passing through the centre of gravity of an ingot (143) in order to hoist a bracket (119) carrying the ingot and press it against the set of cutting wires. The unit comprises, in particular, a supporting structure (102) consisting of a single component, which is symmetrical to the median vertical plane, and perpendicular to the wire guides, the supporting structure possessing two upper lateral flanges (111, 112) which carry on both sides the wire guides (136, 137), with the guide means (123) of the bracket (119) carrying the ingot (143) located in the lower part.
