A device for the transmission of electromagnetic radiation comprising a wafer (1) of a semi-conductor material in which is formed an array of parallel slits (2) each normal to the plane of the wafer and being filled with an optically active material, such as a liquid crystal, the electric field within the slits being controlled by applying a voltage across the walls of each slit which varies according to the distance from the slit opening. The variation in voltage may conveniently be produced by forming on one wall of each slit a conducting layer (4) and forming an electrically resistive layer (5) in the material of the opposite wall of each slit.
