A carpet sweeper to be moved back and forth by operating a handle is provided with a rotary cleaning brush adapted to be moved in contact with the floor by means of drive wheels on a sweeper body. The frame cover of the sweeper body is of a double wall structure made of a thin, lightweight synthetic resin plate. The sweeper body further includes dust receptacles covering the under portion and positioned to the front and rear of the rotary brush, auxiliary brush means mounted on each end of the dust receptacles and means for elevating the drive wheels and comb members to clean the rotary brush. The operating members for opening or closing the dust receptacles and for elevating means are disposed on the upper surface of the frame cover.
