The invention relates to an apparatus for receiving and positioning veneers fed by conveyor means. The apparatus comprises means for gripping the veneers and means for detecting the location and/or position of the veneers on a conveyor belt. There is at least one gripping means on both sides of the feeding direction center line of the veneer. The gripping means are arranged to reciprocate essentially in the feeding direction of the veneers and to grip the veneer on its leading edge side and to position the veneer on the basis of the information provided by the detection means to the desired location in the feeding direction of the veneers.
