Lithium hydrogentitanates prepared by acid treatment of lithium titanate and having pH values of 11.2 or below; and those represented by the general formula: Hx, Liy-x, Tix, O4 (wherein y ≥ x > 0, 0.8 ≤ y ≤ 2.7 and 1.3 ≤ z ≤ 2.2). These lithium hydrogentitanates are useful as active materials of positive and negative electrodes for secondary batteries of nonaqueous electrolyte type, and can realize a charging capacity exceeding the theoretical one.
