To provide a barium sulfate powder production method using cheap barium sulfide as a feedstock such that a high performance barium sulfate powder that exhibits a high degree of whiteness and is less susceptible to generation of volatile components can be obtained at low cost. A method for producing a barium sulfate powder by heating a barium sulfate powder feedstock obtained with barium sulfide as a feedstock at 600 to 1300 DEG C, the method being characterized in that the holding time X (min.) at the heating temperature t DEG C is equal to or greater than the time represented by the general formula. X (min.) = A * 106 * e(-0.015 * t) A is a value of 8 or more and the upper limit of X is 3000 minutes.
