The present invention provides a sizing agent-coated carbon fiber excellent in adhesiveness between the carbon fiber and a matrix resin, stability of the physical properties of a composite in the case where long-term storage of a prepreg and high-order processability, a method for producing the sizing agent-coated carbon fiber, a prepreg, and a carbon fiber-reinforced composite material. The present invention is a carbon fiber obtained by coating the carbon fiber with a sizing agent which comprises at least an aliphatic epoxy compounds (A) and an aromatic epoxy compound (B1) as aromatic compound (B), which is characterized in that a ratio of (a)/(b) between (a) the height (cps) of the component of a bond energy (284.6 eV) attributable to CHx, C-C, C=C and (b) the height (cps) of the component of a bond energy (286.1 eV) attributable to C-O of the C1s inner shell spectrum determined by measuring the surface of the sizing agent with an X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy at the photoelectron escape angle of 15 DEG by using AlK &agr; 1.2 as X-ray source is 0.50 to 0.90.
