To make processing on a receiving side easier. A subtitle processing unit (123) converts subtitle data for use with 2D images to subtitle data for use with 3D images that supports a transmission format for 3D image data. This makes processing on a receiving side easier, since said receiving side can then easily generate the following on the basis of the subtitle data for use with 3D images: left-eye subtitle display data for superimposition onto left-eye image data in 3D image data; and right-eye subtitle display data for superimposition onto right-eye image data in said 3D image data. In addition to the 3D image data and the subtitle data for use with 3D images, display control information including shift information and region partition information which sets the display regions for the left-eye and right-eye subtitles are transmitted. Parallax applied to part or all of the subtitles can be changed dynamically in accordance with changes in image content. The shift information is generated with subpixel precision.
