This invention aims to provide a polyimide film production method capable of efficiently producing polyimide film at high quality even under high temperature environment by using modified tenter device. When a self-supporting film F, being conveyed with its two ends in width direction being held by a tenter device 1, is heated for producing polyimide film, the tenter device 1 includes guiding members 41 provided on the two sides of the conveyance path of the self-supporting film F, and a pair of tenter chains 5 moving along the guiding members 41 and having a film holding mechanism that holds the edge of the self-supporting film F. The tenter chain 5 includes a rotating body for movably supporting the tenter chain. The rotating body is rotatably supported at its center by an axle member extending in a direction parallel to the conveyance plane of the self-supporting film and perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the guiding members 41. The axle member is directly or indirectly fixed to the same member to which the film holding mechanism is fixed.
