This invention provides a magnesium alloy sheet material with excellent plastic formability as well as rigidity, and a magnesium alloy formed article with excellent rigidity. The said magnesium alloy sheet material contains hard particles in its matrix of magnesium alloy. The said sheet material is referred to as surface portion, when the portion from its surface to a depth of 40% in the direction of thickness and the remaining portion is referred to as central portion. The hard particles existing in the central portion have a maximum particle size of 20 &mgr; m or above and less than 50 &mgr; m, those existing in the surface portion have a maximum size of no more than 20 &mgr; m. Since the hard particles in the surface portion are fine particles they hardly become the starting points of break during plastic forming. The rigidity of the sheet material is improved by the particles because the larger hard particles exist in the central portion.
