Vacuum insulating glass unit having a layered pillar. The apparatus includes a glass edge seal between the glass pane with a substantial vacuum in the gap between the two glass panes, and the glass pane. A plurality of columns are located between the glass panes as a spacer maintains a vacuum gap. Pillar has a functional layer on the surface of the sintered ceramic, alpha alumina, or zirconia, and the main body unit having a tapered side wall.
