Welding the blank assembly 200 includes a capping material 210 within the welding region 220 of the assembly. Capping material may help to protect the weld joint 208 for joining together a first sheet metal piece 12 and the second sheet metal piece (112). At least one of the sheet metal piece has a coating material layer 18 is removed prior to forming the weld joint so that the coating material is not contaminate the weld joint. The removed coating material can be collected before the welded joint is formed, the weld joint may be re-applied as a part of the capping material after formed, capable of changing a coating material effective to weld joint protective material from potential welding pollutants have. Capping material may comprise an additional material from a source other than the coating material layer.
