Femto base station (BS) 2 with different timing: maintains the femto BS downlink timing and the femto BS uplink timing. Uplink reference timing of the femto base station is based on the macro uplink timing utilized by the one or more than one UE device in the vicinity of the femto BS. In some embodiments, the femto BS may synchronize their femto uplink timing, and the macro uplink timing utilized by the nearest UE device for transmitting uplink signals to the macro BS. In other embodiments, the femto BS determines his femto base station uplink timing based on the one or more uplink signals from their vicinity of the UE device for transmission to the macro BS. In various embodiments, the femtocell uplink signals and the macrocell uplink signals are synchronized is received at the femtocell BS. This approach enables the FDM (frequency division multiplexing) in the uplink between the macro cell and femto cell.
