Personal audio device such as a wireless telephone is to produce a squelch signal from the error microphone signal, and injecting the squelch signal to a speaker or other output transducer to cause the removal of the ambient audio sound. Error microphone is also provided close to the speaker to provide an error signal indicative of the effect of noise reduction. Secondary path estimation adaptive filter is used to estimate the acoustic path from the electrical noise reduction circuit through the transducer to an audio source it can be removed from the error signal. Noise bursts are intermittent injection is controlled by adjustment of the estimated adaptive filter the secondary path, the secondary path estimation can be maintained, regardless of the presence and amplitude of the audio source.
