Personal audio device such as a wireless telephone is to produce a squelch signal from the microphone signal, and injecting the squelch signal to a speaker or other output transducer to cause the removal of the ambient audio sound. The microphone measures the surrounding environment, but also includes a component due to the sound output transducer. The adaptive filter is used to estimate the electro-acoustic path to the at least one microphone from the noise reduction circuit through the transducer to an audio source can be removed from the microphone signal. The relative amount of the crystal of the ambient sound present in the microphone signal relative to the amount of transducer output of the audio source present in the microphone signals is performed in order to determine whether to update the adaptive response.
