The present invention relates during soft handover to a method and system for uplink (EU) operation in a wireless communication system improvement. The system includes a wireless transmit / receive unit (WTRU), 2 more than one node B and the radio neteuwoteu controller (RNC). A node B may be designated as a primary Node B, the primary Node B may control the EU operations including uplink scheduling, and hybrid automatic repeat request (H-ARQ) during soft handover. By controlling the H-ARQ by the primary Node B it can be avoided during soft handover the soft buffer corruption. Alternatively, RNC may control EU operation, including H-ARQ during soft handover. In this case, RNC generates final acknowledgment / negative acknowledgment (ACK / NACK) determined based on the error check results of the Node B.
