Highly heat-resistant inorganic fibers, the multilayer mounting mat (20) for optionally an organic binder, and an exhaust gas treatment system 10 including a selectively expandable material. A plurality of layers of mounting mat contains a significant proportion of the inorganic fibers oriented in the xy plane of the mounting mat. The exhaust gas treatment device comprises a multilayer mounting mat disposed in a gap between the housing 12, the weak catalyst support structure (18) resiliently mounted in the housing, and the housing and the fragile catalyst support structure.
