According to the present invention, the initial defect portion or the game apparatus and method for continuous separation of the edge in a continuous process for the flexible ribbon brittle material such as a thin glass ribbon it is disclosed which is formed in the ribbon. Initial defective portion is converted into a crack propagating successively through the whole processing of the ribbon. Cracking itself does not result in a material loss. After cracking, the cut side edges and proceeds along different paths to the internal characteristics areas to avoid contact damage between the characteristic region and the edge portion. Characteristic region may be stored may be provided for further processing. Flexible brittle ribbon may be fed from a roll (spool) of the substrate or from the hot-forming apparatus.
