A device for scanning a physical aperture or surface comprises a light source and a wide-angle lens. Light from the light source is incident on the pattern adjacent to the wide-angle lens or away. Preferably, the pattern is in the focal plane of the wide angle lens. The pattern cross the surface of the body, such as a hole, and Ido, defines in part a side portion of the pattern, which extends along the surface thereof. The processor is configured to receive an image of the side surface portion from the wide-angle lens, and determines the position of the side part of the coordinate system using a known focal plane of the wide angle lens. A plurality of side parts are reconstructed by the processor to build a three-dimensional shape. These three-dimensional shapes can be used for the customization of a medical device, such as a diagnosis, navigation, or hearing aid.
