A process for alkylation of benzene contained in the benzene-containing refinery gasoline stream containing at least one of C6 to C8 olefin of at least 0.1% by weight is disclosed. In the process, connected in series with each other in at least a first alkylation reaction zone and the second alkylation reaction zone, to produce an alkylation effluent, the benzene having a benzene content reduced as compared to the purified gasoline stream containing purified gasoline stream from the one or more of C2 to C5 olefins are contacted under alkylation conditions with an alkylating agent selected. Whereas the purified gasoline stream is all that is introduced into the first alkylation step, the alkylation is aliquot of water outflow is recycled and introduced into a second alkylation reaction zone other than the first alkylation reaction zone.
